American, Asian and European Art Pottery In Englewood Antique Trader Auction #2

Bidding Ends August 27

Auction overview

The auction is particularly strong in American and European art pottery, with several notable Weller Pottery pieces from the 1920s–1930s. The Weller lots emphasize the Arts & Crafts movement and faux-bois/naturalistic designs, including tree trunks, oak leaves, apples, berries, birds, and woodland imagery.

Other major categories include:

Weller Pottery — Glendale, Woodcraft, Apple Tree, and squirrel pieces.

Carlton Ware — numerous 1920s–1950s Art Deco, chinoiserie, and Rouge Royale pieces from England.

Paraguayan terracotta folk art — several works attributed to Serafín Marsal, depicting market vendors, rural people, and everyday Paraguayan life.

ANRI carved wood figures — Italian Alpine folk-art carvings, including nurses, pharmacists, and traditional figures.

French and European porcelain — Limoges, Sèvres-style, Jean Pouyat, M. Redon, Carl Tielsch, and Fischer & Mieg.

Jamaican and Caribbean folk art — ceramic and terracotta market-woman figures.

Glass and metalware — Bristol glass, Danish art glass, American Brilliant Period cut glass, sterling pieces, and brass.

Other collectibles — a Hohner Chromonica 64 harmonica, Effanbee military doll, Japanese Oyama doll, Thai Benjarong pottery, Santa Clara pottery, ANRI carvings, and maritime artwork.

Notable Weller pieces

The 1920s Weller “Glendale” Double Bud Vase, Item #78385 is especially visually distinctive. It has a twin-tree-trunk structure with a high-relief blue-and-yellow bird overlooking a nest containing three speckled eggs. The surrounding relief incorporates berries, leaves, and dense foliage, making it a strong example of Weller's highly sculptural naturalistic aesthetic.

Item #78392, the Weller Squirrel Footed Bowl, is another attractive Arts & Crafts piece. Its faux-bois woodland setting incorporates a relief squirrel, oak leaves, and acorns. The catalog's suggested auction/market range of $70–$175 is dependent on size and condition, with the stated hairline cracks potentially affecting value.

Item #78398, Weller Woodcraft Oak Leaf Footed planter, features a particularly rustic design: a hollowed-log form on four limb-stub feet, molded oak leaves, and a branch-like handle. Its earthy green, brown, yellow, and reddish palette is characteristic of the Woodcraft aesthetic.

Item #78390, Weller “Apple Tree” Fan Vase, is attributed to the 1920–1928 period and has a fan-shaped body, pedestal foot, and raised apple-tree decoration.

Item #78393, Weller Woodcraft Apple Tree Double Bud Vase, combines two tree-trunk flower chambers with an intertwined central framework and raised apple branches, leaves, and red fruit. The catalog estimates $100–$150 for excellent, undamaged examples.

Italian religious objects: Several small embossed ex-voto milagro charms, generally 2–4 inches, depicting praying figures, babies, cows, trucks, wedding couples, hands/body parts, and motherhood symbols. The descriptions interpret these as traditional devotional offerings or petitions for healing, protection, fertility, safe travel, marriage, and family well-being.

Japanese antiques and export wares: A substantial portion consists of Satsuma, Kutani, Imari, Kyō-yaki, and moriage pieces. Highlights include a Satsuma incense burner with guardian lions, a dragonware vase, a lobster/prawn-motif teapot, a “Thousand Faces” piece, and several elaborately gilded vases.

Chinese export porcelain: There are numerous Canton, Famille Rose, and Rose Medallion pieces, including bowls, plates, punch/table bowls, and covered vessels. Several are described as 19th-century export porcelain made for Western markets.

European porcelain: Lots include Nippon porcelain, Royal Worcester, Samuel Radford, Wedgwood “Columbia Gold,” antique berry bowls, salt cellars, and a porcelain hatpin holder.

Russian folk art: Two hand-painted Khokhloma wooden pieces feature the characteristic black, red, and gold decoration with berries and foliage.

Other decorative arts: A 1914 personalized green-patinated urn, French Rococo-style gilt crystal candelabras, a Fenton opalescent glass piece, Weller “Velva” pottery, Westmoreland milk glass, Southwestern/Mexican pottery, brass objects, and a ceramic elephant.

Music and vinyl: Lots 229 onward shift toward vintage records, including Scott Joplin, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Bach, Bobby Vee, Oliver!, Candide, The Nylons, Neil Young’s Harvest, Nat King Cole, Carole King’s Tapestry, and recordings involving Pablo Casals.
